QLD: State road toll well down

BRISBANE, Dec 24 AAP - There were 84 fewer Queensland road fatalities this year compared to
the same period last year, while the current holiday toll is less than one-third that of the
same time in 1997.

Police said by 1.30pm (AEST) today, a total of 274 people had died from Queensland road
accidents in 1998, compared to 358 last year.

Police have repeatedly linked the big drop in fatalities to speed cameras which came into
operation late last year.

Since the Christmas-New Year period began, four people have died on Queensland roads, the
last a motorcyclist who ran into a cow in the Cape York Peninsula township of Laura late
yesterday.

The toll for the same period last year was 13.

Police have warned motorists they intend to have a strong presence on the state's roads
during the holidays, concentrating on drink-driving and speeding.
