FED: $1 million paid for ten bob note
An anonymous Sydney collector has paid a record $1 million for a 1913 Australian ten-shilling
note - the first to be printed in the British Empire.
The banknote is also the first designed and printed in Australia and carries the serial number 1.
Former Prime Minister ANDREW FISHER instigated the first Australian banknotes to mark Federation.
At the glittering launch in Kings Warehouse, Flinders Street, Melbourne, on May 1,
1913, Mr FISHER presented the first note to the youngest daughter of then Governor-General
Lord DENMAN.
Banknote No 1 has remained in her family's possession in England until recently purchased
by Sydney coin dealers Monetarium Australia Pty Ltd.
Director BARRIE WINSOR says banknote No 1 is regarded as the holy grail of Australia's
paper money.
