NSW: Man jailed for shaking baby to death

A 26-year-old man from central New South Wales, who shook his de facto wife's baby
to death, has been jailed for at least five and a half years.

PETER ANDREW HOWARD, of Bathurst, has pleaded guilty to the manslaughter of eight-month-old
ADAM HOLBROUGH in January 1996.

In setting a maximum of seven-and-a-half years, NSW Supreme Court judge Justice TIMOTHY
STUDDERT said the protection of children was fundamental to Australian society.

He said HOWARD was convicted in 1994 of occasioning actual bodily harm to another baby
-- then seven weeks old.
