NEWBRIDGE AT THE HEART OF NEW POLISH NATIONAL DATA NETWORK

KANATA, Ontario, June 20 /PRNewswire/ -- Newbridge Networks today announced it has supplied switching and network management equipment as part of a contract with Poland's main telecommunications operator, Telecom Polska SA (TPSA), for a new national digital data network in

that country. The contract is further evidence of the strong ties Newbridge Networks is forging with the countries of Central & Eastern Europe.

Local Newbridge Networks distributor Apexim recently completed installation of the core network. The initial digital infrastructure comprises 11 nodes in Warsaw and nine nodes covering the rest of Poland. Each node consists of a Newbridge(R) 3600 MainStreet(R) Bandwidth Manager with centralized network management provided by the fully graphical 4602 MainStreet Intelligent NetworkStation(TM).

Nodes are linked via 2 Mbit/s circuits, where possible with fiber, but with interfaces to existing transmission media, including microwave links and analog copper cables, as required.

Before the network was installed, customers had to lease either a 2 Mbit/s circuit or a point-to-point voice grade cable for low-speed modem connection. TPSA is now able to offer a rental charge of US$700 per month for a 300 kilometer 64 kbit/s digital circuit - the same cost as a voice grade cable.

TPSA plans to expand the network with additional nodes and services, including a frame relay service. It also intends to install a synchronous digital hierarchy (SDH)-based backbone network linking more than 30 major locations throughout Poland.

Zbigniew Kadzielski, Vice President, Systems and Technologies at Apexim, explained, "The opportunities in Poland are tremendous because of the need to upgrade existing services and the increasing demand from businesses. The flexibility and functionality of the Newbridge product portfolio has allowed Apexim to be one of the first integrators to deliver advanced networks."

TPSA and other Polish operators currently offer localized services covering just a few hundred square kilometers, but Apexim is now bidding to become an operator in several of the 49 administrative areas of Poland.

"Our relationship with Newbridge began two years ago. Since then we have received thorough training in the UK and now have extensive in-house expertise to support the Newbridge equipment and, in turn, to provide training to our customers," added Mr. Kadzielski.
